A Primer on Infrastructure Financing

  • Published:Wednesday, April 26, 2017

Global infrastructure spending currently sits at US$2.5 trillion. Infrastructure spending requirements sit at US$3.3 trillion annually out to 2030 suggesting significant funding gaps exist. Unlocking additional investment capacity is a necessary factor in eliminating these gaps.

Between infrastructure funds, institutional investors, public treasuries, development banks, commercial banks, corporations, and even retail investors, more than US$5 trillion a year is estimated to be available for infrastructure investment, more than enough to satisfy funding gaps.

Of course, it is not as simple as that. Some financing types suit the needs of investors better than others so funding mechanisms for infrastructure projects must be selected in a way to maximize possible investment.
